Take Action for Goats – Tell Paul Smith to Ditch Mohair

On “humane” and “responsible” mohair farms in South Africa and Lesotho, workers force goats to endure hell on earth. The investigation includes footage from shearing sheds certified by the misleadingly named “Responsible Mohair Standard” and implicates Paul Smith, the British fashion house selling suits and apparel made with mohair.

Please urge Paul Smith to stop hiding behind meaningless labels and to end its use of mohair.

Goats Cry Out in Pain

The footage, captured by PETA Asia investigators, shows workers violently hitting goats with brooms and poles, dragging struggling goats by their horns and legs, and pinning goats to the ground as the animals cry out in fear and pain.

Paul Smith Ignores the Violence

These goats’ screams are a wake-up call to anyone considering buying a jumper made with mohair. PETA UK showed Paul Smith representatives this footage, but they chose to ignore this violence.

Top Retailers Ban Mohair

NEXT, Helmut Lang, G-Star, Gap, Fred Perry, Barbour, UNIQLO, Zara, and many other top retailers have banned mohair.  Now, we are calling on Paul Smith to follow suit.

Tell Paul Smith That Mohair Belongs Nowhere – Except on Goats’ Bodies

Paul Smith markets mohair as a “speciality,” but behind every mohair garment are blood, panic, beatings, and cries from goats. Goats need their hair; humans don’t. The best thing that you can do to help exploited goats is to refuse to buy mohair – and urge Paul Smith to stop selling it.

Read The letter

Dear Paul Smith:

I was horrified and heartbroken to watch new footage from PETA Asia’s investigation into “responsible” and “humane” mohair farms in South Africa and Lesotho that implicates your supply chain. The undercover footage shows workers violently striking goats with brooms and poles, dragging them by their horns and legs, pinning them to the ground, and leaving them bleeding from careless shearing. Workers even hauled goats by their sensitive tails, which can easily break their spines.

One goat with a large, gaping wound – reportedly from a jackal attack – was shorn anyway, screaming in pain as a worker cut around the torn flesh. At other “responsible” facilities, investigators found emaciated goats and the bodies of several dead goats, including a baby, discarded in a heap.

Goats are gentle animals who form strong bonds with their babies and recognise each other’s distinct calls. No certification can make this cruelty “responsible.”

I urge you to take PETA Asia’s evidence seriously and remove mohair from your collections immediately.

Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter.

Yours sincerely,

Peta Australia

My Father had Parkinson’s Disease many years ago, diagnosed in his late 40’s and succumbed in his early 60’s. Not much was known about the disease back then and was poorly managed. I now have 2 acquaintances who have been diagnosed with this affliction, medication has improved a lot and much more understood by the medical fraternity. Services however have not kept up with the demand. There should and must be more funding for this ever growing problem. Services are needed to support those that are suffering including family involved with care of their loved ones.
